About The Role

As a Senior Backend Developer PHP/Symfony – AI & E-Commerce (m/f/d), you will help develop the backend of a high-traffic online shop serving millions of customers. You will work in a backend team alongside three other developers and collaborate closely with the Shop Team Lead and colleagues across the business. This is a senior, hands-on role with influence over architecture, technical standards, and complex e-commerce features. You will also help shape how the team applies AI in software development and explore practical AI applications for the shop. Your work will connect sound engineering with measurable business outcomes, helping deliver solutions that are maintainable, scalable, and commercially valuable.

Qualifications

You bring at least five years of backend development experience with modern PHP and Symfony, along with a strong understanding of software architecture. You have worked with approaches such as Domain-Driven Design, modular monoliths, microservices, or event-driven architecture, and can assess which approach best fits a given problem. You have strong MySQL knowledge and experience with performance optimization, caching, and queues. You have used AI coding assistants or coding agents in practice and can evaluate their output critically. You understand that effective engineering must balance technical quality with business value. Very good German and good English skills are required. Experience with LLM APIs, retrieval-augmented generation, embeddings, vector databases, agentic workflows, e-commerce platforms, or integrations with ERP, payment, and logistics systems is beneficial.

Mentoring or supporting other developers is also welcome.

Responsibilities

You will evolve the backend architecture using PHP 8.x and Symfony, making considered decisions about scalability, maintainability, and performance. You will design and implement complex e-commerce capabilities across areas such as checkout, pricing, product assortment, search, and fulfillment. You will promote code quality through clean code practices, automated testing, code reviews, and CI/CD. Using tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, or GitHub Copilot, you will support development, refactoring, testing, and documentation while helping establish effective AI-assisted workflows. You will identify and assess AI opportunities for the shop, including intelligent search, product data enrichment, recommendations, and process automation.

In partnership with product and business teams, you will translate goals into technical solutions and consider relevant measures such as conversion, average order value, margin, and process costs. You will also share knowledge and provide technical guidance to colleagues.
