About The Role

PKS is seeking an experienced Senior Software Developer IBM i (all genders) to join its IBM i team. This full-time, permanent position is available immediately and can be based in Frankfurt or Ravensburg. Remote work from elsewhere in Germany may also be possible, subject to a willingness to travel as required.

You will help evolve complex, long-established IBM i applications rather than simply maintain them. Working closely with colleagues, customers, and business stakeholders, you will assess existing systems and turn requirements into durable technical solutions. The role is suited to a developer who combines strong IBM i knowledge with a practical interest in modern engineering methods and takes ownership of demanding modernization initiatives.

Qualifications

You bring at least five years of professional IBM i development experience and have contributed to sophisticated, business-critical applications. You are comfortable navigating established codebases and data models, identifying their strengths and constraints, and recommending realistic approaches to modernization.

• Strong knowledge of RPG or Free RPG, SQL, Db2 for i, ILE, and service programs.
• Experience with modern IBM i development tools and the analysis of legacy applications.
• Practical understanding of architecture layers, data access layers, APIs or web services, modularization, and refactoring.
• Working knowledge of Git or other version control systems, DevOps fundamentals, testing, and clear technical documentation.
• Strong communication skills for engaging directly with customers and business teams, and the ability to estimate work and explain technical options.
• Fluent German and good English skills.

Experience in modernization projects, technical consulting, code reviews, and coaching developers is especially valuable. Knowledge of COBOL or technologies such as Java, Python, Node.js, and JavaScript frameworks is an advantage, but not essential. An interest in using AI-assisted development tools thoughtfully, with human review and oversight, is welcome.

• Own work from requirements analysis and effort estimation through implementation, testing, and documentation.
• Use modern development tools and apply AI-assisted tools responsibly within a human-in-the-loop approach.
• Work with customers and business stakeholders to translate needs into practical, long-term technical solutions.
• Support the development of colleagues through coaching, constructive code reviews, and knowledge sharing.
